Wound cleansing
Wash any wounds immediately with soap and water for 20 minutes. Wound cleansing is important in rabies prevention. Thorough wound cleansing markedly reduces the likelihood of rabies in animal studies. A virucidal agent such as povidone-iodine should be used to irrigate the wounds.
Seek medical attention for any wounds.
Check your rabies vaccination, rabies titer status, and tetanus vaccination status at:
https://auburn.bioraft.com → My Account → My Profile → Medical Surveillance → Records
- A rabies titer >/= 0.5IU indicates a positive antibody response to rabies vaccination.
- Tetanus boosters are recommended every 10 years. If it has been 5 or more years since your tetanus booster and you sustain a puncture wound a tetanus booster is recommended.
